About Us

1976 Rushden Historic Transport Society was formed after an advertisement was placed in the local press by Richard Woodcock to attract people interested in old transport.

A meeting held at the Rose & Crown pub, Rushden was attended by 8 people and so RHTS was born.

1978 It was soon decided to hold an annual transport rally to raise funds: the first one was held in Hall Park, Rushden

1980 Bristol Lodekka EBD651 was purchased from United Counties.

1984 Lease on Rushden Station obtained from Northamptonshire County Council

1985 Transport Museum and Bar opened at station

1987 Station threatened with demolition due to proposed road "improvements"

1990 Demolition threat lifted

1996 Station freehold purchased from Northamptonshire County Council

1997 Two fire engines added to the fleet.

1998 Planning granted to extend track towards Higham Ferrers. Barclay steam loco EDMUNDSONS acquired. Sentinel diesel shunter kindly donated by Castle Cement. Demonstration runs by EDMUNDSONS were the first steam to run at Rushden for 33 years.

1999 20,000 tons of spoil excavated from cutting north of Rushden station and track extended towards Shirley Road bridge.

2000 Further track laid for siding space.

2002 Signal box moved from platform and installed on new structural steel base. Refurbishment of buffet coach. Arrival of Bagnall 0-6-0ST CHERWELL

2006 Permanent rail access connection installed. Siding layout remodelled.

2007 ??

The annual Cavalcade of Historic Transport & Country show (now in its 29th successful year) is one of the main income streams enabling us to operate the Transport Museum as an educational facility and to restore items of historic transport.
